A Visit from My Agent Sara Megibow

*As of Tuesday, June 29, Sara will no longer be accepting referrals from this blog post. Thank you to everyone who sent queries and partials. Sara said she read some excellent queries and pages and even requested a few full manuscripts. She'll probably do another guest post soon about what worked and what didn't. Thanks again!

Well, I said I'd only be blogging once a week, but that was before I got an email from Sara with some news I knew you'd want to hear. I'll let her tell you all about it.

Dear Natalie's readers -

My name is Sara Megibow and I have the true honor of being the literary agent representing Natalie and her writing. It is my privilege to be working with such a talented, hard-working and passionate writer!

Natalie is being kind enough to allow me to post this message to all of you - thank you.

So, here goes...I am on the hunt for romance writers. If you have a completed romance novel of about 100,000 words, please send me a brief query letter before the end of June. Let the floodgates open - I really, really want to read your work!

The project must be complete, not represented by another agent and be in any sub-genre of romance except category or inspirational (yes, this includes young adult, fantasy with romantic elements, paranormal, etc). Email me at query (at) nelsonagency (dot) com with a note in the subject line saying "referred by Natalie's blog" and a 2-3 paragraph overview of the work in the body of the email. Yes include your website or blog address, no don't include sample pages, synopsis, headshot or attachments.

You can find out more about me and my tastes at www.publishersmarketplace.com/Members/SaraMegibow

and more about our agency at www.nelsonagency.com

Happy writing!

Sara

I hope you'll enjoy this little referral. If you have questions feel free to ask in the comments section.

*This just in: The 100,000 word guideline is for adult romance. YA should be quite a bit shorter.

**This offer will be good for at least a week or two, so there is no rush to submit today. :)

What a great opportunity Natalie and Sara! I can't write 'em, but I'm a big fan of romances and can't wait to see more great romance authors coming from NLA.

(Natalie, does this mean you get a finders fee for any author Sara signs from your blog?)

Stephanie Thornton said...

What a great opportunity for all the romance writers out there!

That's what I'm talkin' about! Love me some romance. So cool of both of you to invite blog readers.

Fantastic! Thank you for posting this. I have sent you a query!

Carolyn V. said...

That is so awesome! I hope she gets what she is looking for. Too bad I don't write romance.

Kelley Vitollo said...

I have a quick question. What if we have multiple completed books that fit under romance? I have an adult romance (queried you) and a YA romance. I didn't notice the note added later on the bottom that revised the word count for YA. Originally, I didn't think my YA would fit what you were looking for because of that.
Thank you!

Natalie said...

Kelly- I will check with Sara about that one, but for now I'd say just submit your best piece.

Joey said...

Great offer, thanks for posting! Now, pardon me, I have a sudden deadline to beat. *runs away*

Uh oh, Sara already has my partial, but it isn't romance. There are romantic elements, though...

Aubrie said...

They already have my partial right now! It's sci fi romance.

Rhyanna said...

cool I have a romance :)
oops its less than 100,000 its about 50,000 or 65000, I'll have to double check.
What if the romance novel, complete or so I think, is less than 100,000 words?

If its ok, the next thing for me is to figure out how to write the award winning, I want this novel, query letter and pitch
Thanks to Nathan and Sara for doing this :)

queen44 said...

This may sound stupid but does this mean no fantasy with romantic elements? Thanks

Natalie said...

Queen- The wording is a bit confusing, sorry about that. Fantasy is fine, as long it's kind of romantic. The same thing goes for other sub-genres (paranormal, sci-fi, steampunk, whatever).

If it's a romantic story you can query with the referral. :)

Natalie said...

Rhyanna- I think shorter romances are called category romances and she isn't looking for those right now. Sorry! If it's YA you can go ahead and query.

queen44 said...

thank you

Melisa said...

I queried and she asked for a partial. Thanks Natalie for blogging this opportunity.

Anita said...

Very cool!

Jamie said...

Sorry to ask a follow-up question about length, but is the 80,000-90,000 range acceptable? (Not a category romance, in case that matters.)

Thanks. I'm sure she'll be overwhelmed, and I don't want to add to the deluge if my novel is too short!

Natalie said...

Jamie- I'd say 80,000-90,000 is probably close enough.

Roxane B. Salonen said...

Natalie, this is a novel (ahem) idea. I've never seen an agent make a request like this on a client's blog but this is very cool. Wish I were writing romance, or done with my YA. So nice of you to be the bearer of this message. :)

Happy writing and mothering and all that stuff.

Erica Chapman said...

Way cool, Natalie! Thanks for sharing. I tweeted it, hopefully we can get some bites!

Slamdunk said...

Wow, what a great gift opportunity for your readers. I am late in posting a comment on this one, but I doubt that your agent has made it through all the emails anyway.

Stina Lindenblatt said...

Wow. I have a YA romantic suspense I'll be querying soon. I'll be sure to shoot off my query to Sara before the end of the month. :D

Susan Fields said...

This is great news - thanks for posting the letter!

Thanks for posting this awesome opportunity Natalie!

Backfence said...

Natalie: Mine is 120,000 words. Do you think that's too far over the limit? It is completed and in the query process.

Natalie said...

Backfence-

It never hurts to try. If your manuscript is REALLY fantastic go ahead and send it. If she's uncomfortable with an extra 20,000 words, but she loves the writing and the concept she'll probably help you pare it down. :)
