The Writing Bug is Contagious

Yesterday morning my eighty-seven-year-old grandpa called me to tell me he'd written a story.

My older brother is half-way through his first novel.

My younger brother started writing his book too.

My seven-year-old daughter carries a notebook around with her and is constantly writing things down. She wants to be a writer when she grows up, just like her mom.

The stories they write make me happy, and I wonder if they'd all be writing now if I hadn't tried it first. I'm glad I did.

Do you have friends or family who have caught the writing bug?

I started writing because my wife drug me to a writers conference. There were so many wonderful classes, so she convinced me to go and take notes for her in the ones she couldn't attend. She picked my entire schedule. By the end of the conference I had met many wonderful, funny, quirky, sincere, dedicated people and become friends with them. It reignited my desire to write. My wife and I still go to conferences together, but now I choose my own schedule. :)

This is so funny. Yes, my mom periodically mentions wanting to write but doesn't think she could devote the time to it. My step-sis has started having ideas and I could see her coming up with something.

I've had family tell me they want to write, but to my knowledge, none have picked up a pen or sat down at a key board. As we all know, it's not as easy as it looks. :)

That's such a wonderful thing to have done for them :) Much better to have given them writing than... well, the 'flu for instance! :)

That's so cool, Natalie, and I'd be willing to bet that you paved the way for their willingness to try writing. :-)

How cool that you've influenced so many people! My kids both write. My son is actually the one that got me writing again. I guess that means he influences me more than I influence him?

My niece just told me last month that she writes fanfiction on fanfiction.net--which is crazy because when I was in middle school I did the same thing, and I didn't even tell her about it, she learned about it through her friends! I have hopes that I can convert her to a YA novelist before long. Muahahahaha ;)

My mom had a dream that inspired a first line of a story, but that's as far as she got.

I love that so many of your family members are following your lead. :)

How wonderful, Natalie, that so many in your family are now writing.

My older son's been a writer for years now. We joke about which of us will get published first. My bet's on him. He recently completed a 120,000 word novel, which he started two years ago during NaNoWriMo, while he was a full-time college student and going through chemo.
