How Are Those Goals Coming?

Last week I decided that I'm going to finish my first draft by May 31. I planned to write 1000 words a day in order to reach this goal. I am happy to report that I am doing well! I've written 1000 words everyday (or caught up on words I missed) and I'm right on target to finish by the 31st.

I haven't written this consistently for almost a year so it's been a challenge, but I'm liking the results. I've been surprised that it's easier to sit down at the computer and write now that I know I have to meet my goal. Also I've been pleased to find that the story is coming along nicely and doesn't feel forced.

I've never been good with daily writing requirements, but I'm starting to think I just haven't tried hard enough to make it work before now.

Have you ever tried to write a certain amount every day? Was it hard or did you get used to it after a while? How are your goals going?

Wow! Congratulations on your goal and on being track to finish :) I definitely try to write a certain amount every day, depending on what I've got going on. I like having a word count goal to work towards!

Congratulations! I try to write 500 words a day, but some weeks are easier than others. Once I'm off for the summer (I'm a teacher), then I plan on sticking to a regular schedule and writing more words a day.

1K a day is a great goal. That's what I try to do as well. :) Congrats on your writing streak!

I am so pleased that you are doing well on your new regiment! I try to write 1000/day M-F. Right now I am in the groove and it feels great!

Way to go, Natalie!! I haven't given myself specific word count/page count goals but sometimes in revision/rewrite mode I'll set a chapter-per-day goal.

With my new WIP I might experiment with a miminum word count goal.

I recently started setting weekly goals just to try something new. Though I still make small daily goals to make sure I meet my weekly goal! Sometimes it's hard, but it does get easier every day.

The longest goal l ever had was writing 2,000 words a day for NaNoWriMo last November. I met it and it was really fun! There's something so motivating about it because I knew hundreds of people were doing the exact same thing at the same moment.

Keep it up, Natalie, you're a rockstar!!!

I try to write everyday...but I've never imposed a word count on myself. When I'm in the middle of a first draft, I don't need one anyway.

Congrats on doing so well with your wordcount! I try to write a certain amount every day because if I didn't, I'd waste too much time. I need to have targets!

Congrats! Ugh. I hate daily word counts. I usually just do that for the first draft too, but I absolutely hate, hate, hate, it.

But if I didn't have those goals, I don't think any of my stories would ever get finished!

I think I'm on track. But I have myself 6 weeks to finish these edits. Here's hopin'

Congratulations. I'm on track and hoping to finish edits today, re-read tomorrow and be done by Thursday then off to a new project for the weekend.

Yay! Congrats on keeping your goals! I've never tried a specific word count goal before, more just a: "I must write every day" kind of thing. But whenever I start my next project I think i'll be giving this a try because I can't take as long for this book as I did for my last one (or my agent will likely be very unhappy). :)

Good on ya! Way to go, Natalie. My goals aren't being met yet. Yet! I'm going to try--kids and health keep getting in the way. My plan is to catch-up this week (Weds and Thurs), though!

Good luck on your 31st deadline!

Congrats on the progress! I need to get back in the mode of regular goal setting. Word count hasn't moved all week :((

Keep up the great pace and reach that goal!

Congratulations! I love word count goals...and sometimes I even hit them. ;-) National Novel Writing Month is crafted around daily word counts...

Alas, I've had to set timed goals instead of word counts for now. With the word count goals, I focused too much on doing whatever I had to in order to meet the daily goal. I ended up sacrificing quality for it, because I only have a certain amount of time I can write every night.

So for now, no word counts for me, though I do love them, and hope to eventually work my way back up to that. :-)

Good for you! Every time I set writing goals, I find that I beat myself up over not being able to meet them when unforeseen circumstances present themselves. I find that a write more and better quality when I don't put any pressure on myself.

I generally only set number goals in November for NaNo. Other than that I do what I can when I can. The only time I can really set word goals is in the first draft.

I don't really remember what my goals were, though I think something about jogging? :)

When I set a word goal, I usually hit it pretty well. :-) 1k a day is doable. Congrats to you for making it!

1K a day is a very doable goal! Good for you!
I try to set goals like that, too--except weekends. Sometimes I can write more and do and sometimes I'm lucky to get a 100 words. *le sigh*

I had weekly goals during NANOWRIMO...and I was a machine! I'd write up to 5K a day. I think it helped that I was trying to finish before other people. Competition really pushes me.

Congrats on meeting your goals!!!

Goals? What goals? I didn't agree to set any goals.

Kudos on the progress. Send me some pages! :)

Just so you know, I stole your 1000 words a day goal. It's very good and here's why: 1000 words just doesn't seem like that much to me, so it doesn't stress me out. Even if I only get 700 down, getting 1300 the next day STILL doesn't stress me out.

Sometimes I feel like, if I can't site down and write an entire chapter, what's the point? But that's a defeatist attitude. Thanks for showing me the light!

Natalie, did you really have to ask? :) I'm in a very scattered place right now, other than my blog, which is my place of refuge, I think. So, no comment on the goal reaching for now. :) I'll get there. Just need to have a few more things settled first.
