From Me to You

I love getting blog awards. They are fun, and pretty, and getting one means someone out there (at least kind of) likes my blog. But, I've wondered how (or if) I should pass them along or put them on my blog.

I've heard some criticism of blog awards including:

-They always get passed out to the same people, thus going in circles until everyone in a clique has them all.

-It's painfully difficult to pick and choose who should get the awards (I like all my blogging buddies)

-They clutter up your blog and make it look less professional

-They don't really mean anything

I've come up with a few ideas to combat these negatives. Do you want to hear them?

Yes!

Okay then.

Over the past few months I've received 7 awards, so I figure that is more than enough to go around. I won't have to exclude people! I'm going to try to give you all an award that you don't already have and I'm going to try to be thoughtful about it so the awards actually mean something (at least to me).

So, starting tomorrow and going until Christmas there will be some major blog award giving happening here. Don't feel like you need to post or pass along the awards I give you (unless you want to of course), just know that I appreciate all of you!

How do you feel about blog awards? Do you ever discover a great new blog because someone you knew gave it an award?

I like your idea! I think blog awards are fun, but I don't feel compelled to follow all of the rules. :)

I have found a few new blogs to follow, but with time constraints, I haven't clicked on through to as many as I'd like. I don't want to become overwhelmed & stop commenting on blogs I love. I really need more time in my day :)

I share your sentiment.

I do find new blogs through awards and I enjoy receiving them. I don't always follow all of the rules, though. I don't care if it looks unprofessional on the blog, I think it makes them look more popular. :0) LOL

I've met a lot of great bloggers by checking out award winners. Yes, it is hard sometimes to pass on an award and not feel like you are leaving someone out. I'd be lying if I said I didn't like getting them - I still remember the first award I ever got way back when and it made me all misty eyed. Sometimes the awards do go around and around, but we already know that the world is a smaller place thanks to the web, so it's bound to get a little insular at times when it comes to awards. - G

I like the awards, but I do hate leaving people out. I bend the rules sometimes to make them work for me. Overall, I think they bring more positives than negatives because I find a lot of fabulous new blogs to follow.

I've often met lots of fun and interesting bloggers due to seeing their names listed for awards. I like your ideas.

Yes, I've found some cool blogs because of awards. And I'm like you, I have some awards I've received in the past month that I need to give out. It's just so hard figuring out who to give them to:)

I too have found some really great blogs because people gave them awards. I think this is a great idea. I might have a bit of an award giving party too cause I have been given a heap that I have not yet passed on.

I've been remiss in following through with awards I've been given. Bad blogger. But I do appreciate it when someone thinks of me and my little blog.

I like blog awards, but don't feel pressured to follow all the rules. But it's fun to find new blogs others recommend and let people know that I like what they're doing.

That's why you need to come up w/ your own awards -- then we can spam the world w/ awards (which, IMO, is better than those other spams regarding various enhancements/enlargements)

I've definitely discovered some great blogs from awards, and I know some have joined my blog because of awards. I used to pass awards on freely, but I have mixed feelings about them now. I accept awards and appreciate them from the bottom of my heart, but I leave it at that. I say thanks, but don't pass them on. Does that make me a Scrooge or what?

I'm conflicted about blog awards, particularly about the rules because I feel awkward passing rules on to other people. My favorite one came with no strings attached. But, that said, they are a great way to find new blogs and I have enjoyed many people met by following links. And they do make you feel appreciated, and don't we all need that from time to time?

I prefer Meme's to blog awards. I'd rather know more about a person that necessarily have a cute button to put on my blog. What I learn about someone means a lot more to me. It means I discover things I didn't know, I get an inside glimpse of someone else's heart, and hopefully, I find a new friend.

I like receiving an award, but I really dislike having to deal with it afterwards, for all the reasons you give. Also, I don't like having other people's artwork/designs on my blog, so I'm not inclined to display an award other than in a post.

I try to pass the awards on to blogs that I know don't already have the award I'm giving out. If that means the award gets passed around in the same little clique, then that's what it means.

We're creating an ever-larger community with every award we give out, and I can't see a problem with that.

I totally love blog awards! I haven't noticed a clique with them. Rather I've always thought they are a great way to encourage one another!

Seven...rock on! Awards are one of the best ways I come across new blog/bloggers. I struggled with the same things on your list and eventually decided I wanted to share the love. I just don't do it often. And when I do it, like you...I make it BIG.

Wow! Seven awards! That's awesome! :) I think awards are great for networking and spreading the word about blogs we love. And it's a fun way to give our bloggy friends an ego boost. We all know we can use that once in a while. ;)

Yay, I can't wait to see some of the awards you've recieved. I think blog awards are fine. Sometimes it gets a bit overwhelming when you get more than one close together. but overall, blog awards are nice, thoughtful gestures.

I get it. Sometimes I waffle, too. Sometimes I'm uncomfortable sharing the news of a received award, because I don't want it to seem presumptuous, or like I'm patting my own back with the announcement. Recently, though, I added a section to my sidebar that gives thanks to those who've given me awards. That way I can link to their blogs and hopefully generate more traffic for them, and let them know how much I appreciate their thoughts.

You've got a great idea!

I'm honored by the awards I've received. When I started my blog I had a hard time imagining people reading it let alone liking it so much they award me. I don't always keep to the rules, but I do try to pass them on - it is a great way to find out about other blogs.

Caroline Starr Rose said...

I think they're very kind and am honored when I receive one. I also think they can look a bit cluttered (at least on my blog), so I don't post them. I hope I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth...

Like Mary, I don't always keep to the rules, but I do try to pass them on.

I'm kind of bad about blog awards. It's not that I don't truly appreciate them. I do. But I don't post them on my blog, and I always forget to pass them along.

But I can change! I think I see a New Year's Resolution coming on. :)

I try to pass on the awards to newbie's starting out. I was blessed when someone found me when I was just starting out. All of the awards are very appreciated! :O)

I've found a few blogs through awards, but mostly I find them through interesting comments posted on other blogs. If someone has something intriguing to say in just three or four lines, their blogs are usually worth a read.

I love getting blog awards. I feel honored when it happens. At the same time, I feel bad to have to choose who to give them to because I know how good it feels to get one and when someone doesn't get one from me, I don't want them to feel bad. So that's a tough thing, but I still try to pass them around.
I could see how they go in circles but it doesn't seem like a clique thing, more that we're all really interrelated because of our interest in writing.
So they make a blog look unprofessional? LOL I didn't know that. Mine are posted up. Heehee.

Having someone appreciate your work is always welcome, although I can see how multiple awards and the "rules" that accompany them could become onerous. I've discovered new blogs via awards, but my poor Google reader is so bloated! Oy!

They are a wonderful way to share the links of places we love to visit. It's one of the best (easiest) ways to branch out and find new friends.

I think blog awards are a thoughtful way of showing someone that you enjoy their blog and read their posts. I do not think it makes your blog seem less professional, it only shows that people like your blog and that your posts have touched them in some way. What is unprofessional about that?

I have found new great blogs through awards. I have nothing against them.

I think they're fun and a nice way to acknowledge someone in the blogosphere. I see the downside, too. I like all my bloggy friends, and I don't want anyone to feel excluded. I try to give them to new people each time, though I've overlapped at least once.

I love the awards but I do feel pressure to pass out so many and I am always worried that someone I award doesn't like them. So to make me feel more comfortable, I will post your disclaimer "Don't feel you have to post or passalong the award."

They are a great way to network and share blogs that our fellow bloggers enjoy.
