Don't get me wrong, I live a very happy life. I have a beautiful family, a home, food, clothing, and thousands of other comforts. Unfortunately, real life is stressful. I have many demands on my time. Some of the things I do are fun (like writing, snuggle time with the kids, and movie nights with my husband). Most of my daily tasks are mundane (cleaning, cooking, driving kids from place to place). And some of my jobs are downright nasty (like changing poopy diapers and cleaning up dog vomit).
When I read something great, I can leave all of that behind--at least for a few minutes--and get lost in a story.
I'm reading Rick Riordan's PERCY JACKSON series right now and it has been a great little escape.
Have you read anything fabulous lately?

The very last book I read was Catching Fire. I didn't know if it would be as good as The Hunger Games, but it was and more. Over the summer, I read The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan. That book was excellent - it stayed with me for days after I had finished.
I read and loved Hunger Games, but haven't got to Catching Fire yet. Sounds like I need to get to it!
I discovered Carla Negger's romantic suspense books over the summer. They're very enjoyable. I'm currently reading Mist & loving it :)
The Bartered Bride did that for me recently. I'm finding much of what I read becomes study material for me, I really love it when I get one that takes me out of the writer mode like Erica's did.
One of my favorite books this year was the first of a new YA series by Laura Resau called The Indigo Notebook. Generally, I prefer fantasy and do not prefer present tense narratives. So for me, this book started with two strikes against it but I fell in love with the writing and the wonderful characters. A strong recommend.
I love Rick Riordan. He's an excellent writer and those short little reads are great escapes, you're right.
I've read a lot of books recently but Percy Jackson was my most recent favorites. I totally understand the need to escape for a while. The best thing about books? Their problems are usually ten times worse than mine. I feel lucky by the time I'm done.
THE MAGICIANS by Lev Grossman owned me completely for three days; I couldn't put it down, and when I had to put it down (to, you know, sleep ;), I couldn't stop going over it in my head. In retrospect I kind of wish I'd read it a bit slower and taken my time with it, but gripping reads like that are such a treat.
Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick is such a great read, also Kissed by an angel by Elizabeth Chandler is a great little escape.
I haven't read in months, but I have a stack of books I want to read and my nieces are bugging me to read the City of Bones series, plus you know Christmas is like three weeks away .
Right now, I'm reading Evermore. It started out a little slow for me, but I'm really getting into it now. I love finding a book that I can escape in.
I read Evermore too, but there were a couple plot things that I hated. It felt like the author didn't know what to do to get herself out of the plot so she came up with something pretty hokey instead of really working it out.
Sigh.
Right now I'm reading The Poisonwood Bible. I'm enjoying it, but plan to read something YA after I'm done- either Shiver or A Certain Slant of Light.
I'm not reading anything at the moment, but I am about to begin, Woman in Red, by Eileen Goudge this weekend. I'm uber excited about it!!
Escapism, however tempting, is a skid-row romanticism. But it works nonetheless :)
The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams.
A poetic page turning YA novel.
No, I am not reading anything right now. I want to read The Kite Runner, but with Christmas I just haven't done any shopping for me lately :)
My daughter is reading the Percy Jackson series, and I'm thinking of joining her. Have you read the series he started - "39 Clues?" I think it's 39, anyway. I'm thinking of starting her on that for Christmas.
THE EVOLUTION OF CALPURNIA TATE was lovely. I've also read GRACELING and CANDOR (think a YA version of 1984). In the middle of SOLDIER'S SECRET. Just finished LOSING FAITH, by one of the authors who shares my agent (really fun experience).
One thing I love about reading is the intentional way books force you to examine life.
I'm currently working on the new John Irving.
P.S. You're getting a shout-out in my blog today, come on by...
I love to escape in a good tale. It is why I read. And I hope I will give that to readers someday.
I read a lot of fantasy. Recently, I enjoyed Maggie Stiefvater's Lament and Ballad. Also, Laini Taylor's Blackbringer.
I love the Hunger Game series and Kristin Cashore's Graceling and Fire. Thanks to the recs above now I've got some new ones to check out.
Reading has always been a big escape for me. I think that's why I prefer commercial or genre fiction to literary.
And I just watched the preview for the Percy Jackson movie, and definitely wanted to go read the book!
The last things I read were Hunger Games and Catching Fire -- definitely great escapes
I asked for the Percy Jackson series for Christmas. Right now, I'm re-reading the Twilight series (I know, I know, but they're great winter books).
Book and movies are wonderful escapes when needed. Moments away to not deal with reality and maybe see someone else's troubles too. :O)
I haven't been reading lately because I'm so caught up in my rewrites. I'll have to check that series out after the holidays.
"Escaping" into the dream of someone's novel is what it's all about!
I've just reread "The Changeling Sea" by Patricia McKilip and will revisit "Od Magic" while I'm waiting for "Ash" and "Zoli" to arrive.
I've been reading AUTOBIORGRAPHY OF A YOGI for a couple months now, I love it.
much love
Reading?
The Billion Dollar Molecule
As many great blogs as possible
Kindest regards,

On vacation I read The Time Traveler's Wife again because I loved it so much the first time. :)
Oh I want to read Hunger Games and Catching Fire! I read Hush Hush, that was a nice escape. I'm going to read Shiver next-- well after I Beta read for a couple of my friends!
Escape is good :o)
I love Percy Jackson! Can't wait for the movie to come out. Happy reading.
Recently finished and loved Shiver. That was a great escape. I'm currently reading The House of Scorpion, and I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would.
My daughter is reading the Percy Jackson books right now and really enjoying them.
Hey Natalie, I just bought the Percy Jackson series two days ago. Can't wait! The movie looks great. Am reading The Penderwicks and Operation Yes.
I have a stack of books waiting for me to read them. Silksinger by Laini Taylor is #1 right now - love her writing. Next is Leviathan by Scott Westerfield.
